Approved tuition insurance reimbursements are paid directly to the plan holder — the person who purchased the plan — not to the school or to a lender.
How reimbursement payment works
If your claim is approved:
- Payment is issued directly to you as the planholder
- Reimbursement applies to the non-refundable portion of your education costs — tuition, fees, and eligible housing — after any refunds issued by the school have been applied.
- Reimbursement is subject to your plan's benefit limit and the percentage payable for your covered reason, as shown on your Declaration of Coverage.
- The planholder will have the option to split payment and have payment made to the university if there is a balance owed
What if I paid tuition with student loans or financial aid?
Reimbursement is still paid directly to you even if tuition was funded by student loans or financial aid. If you received loans that you are still responsible for repaying after the school's refund, the reimbursement can be used toward that balance. How much will I be reimbursed?
Your reimbursement is calculated as:
Non-refundable tuition, fees, and eligible housing costs — up to your plan's coverage limit
The school's own refund amount is subtracted first. Only the costs you are still out of pocket for after the school's refund policy has been applied are eligible.
For example: if your semester tuition is $15,000 and your school refunds $3,000 after withdrawal, your eligible reimbursement would be up to $12,000 — subject to your coverage limit.
